Well Starmer made a deal with the EU and the world melted through the floor. I will spare you the ins and outs of most of it as the details are tedious however let’s start with the basics. He has not in actual fact done anything of the sort. His great reveal was actually an agreement to talk about the stuff he said that he had got. Those who doubt me should perhaps read the actual document which takes 5 minutes though this is apparently beyond many people and most of the media. Here are the important sections of this great “deal” - as you can see he got nothing though he did give away our fish for 12 years. The EU did him up like a kipper and everyone who knows anything can see it.
II. Security, defence, and development cooperation
6. In view of the Security and Defence Partnership, the United Kingdom and the European Commission should swiftly explore any possibilities for mutually beneficial enhanced cooperation created by the SAFE instrument, once adopted, in accordance with their respective legal frameworks.
Health Security
11. The European Commission and the United Kingdom will explore the potential to enable exchange and cooperation on health security, including the detection of, preparedness for, and response to emerging health threats, to prevent and mitigate against future pandemics and health crises, including within the framework of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement health security provisions to maximise cooperation on health security. Health security, biological and chemical security should be part of regular exchanges at all levels, in appropriate fora, with a view to protecting public health.
III. Putting people at the centre of the European Union – United Kingdom relationship
13. Therefore, the European Commission and the United Kingdom should work towards a balanced youth experience scheme on terms to be mutually agreed. The scheme should facilitate the participation of young people from the European Union and the United Kingdom in various activities, such as work, studies, au-pairing, volunteering, or simply travelling, for a limited period of time. It should provide a dedicated visa path and ensure that the overall number of participants is acceptable to both sides.
IV. Strengthening our economies while protecting our planet and its resources
19. The European Commission and the United Kingdom should explore in detail the necessary parameters for the United Kingdom’s possible participation in the European Union’s internal electricity market, including participation in the European Union’s trading platforms in all timeframes. Meanwhile, the current electricity trading arrangements will continue to apply.
Working towards a Common Sanitary and Phytosanitary Area
24. The United Kingdom and the European Commission should work towards establishing a Common Sanitary and Phytosanitary Area by way of a European Union-United Kingdom Sanitary and Phytosanitary Agreement (hereafter ‘SPS Agreement’).
Working towards linking Emission Trading Systems of the European Union and the United Kingdom
35. Therefore, the United Kingdom and the European Commission should work towards establishing a link between carbon markets by way of a European Union-United Kingdom agreement linking the United Kingdom Emission Trading Scheme (UK ETS) and the European Union Emission Trading System (EU ETS).
Reinforced law enforcement and judicial cooperation in criminal matters
49. The European Commission and the United Kingdom believe that there is scope for reinforcing cooperation through quicker, better and deeper implementation of Part Three of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement and by fully exploiting and building on its potential. To improve this cooperation, the European Commission and the United Kingdom should intensify technical work in the Specialised Committee on Law Enforcement and Judicial Cooperation with the aim to further streamline the cooperation on mutual legal assistance. The European Commission and the United Kingdom will also explore opportunities to enhance the timeliness, efficiency and effectiveness of the provisions of Title VII of Part Three of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement.
VI. Irregular migration
57. The European Commission and the United Kingdom underline their commitment to deepen co-operation on challenges posed by irregular migration – including action to tackle people smuggling and to deepen information sharing to control and manage migration at our respective external borders – while remaining committed to ensuring international protection for those who need it.
Working together on practical solutions and returns
59. The European Commission and the United Kingdom should work together on practical and innovative approaches to reduce irregular migration. This includes work to share best practices and operational information on key issues like returns to third countries, and to explore possible deterrence mechanisms and other innovative solutions, in line with 8 national, European Union and international law. This would be underpinned by closer cooperation across key networks such as the European Migration Network and agencies, including the European Union Agency for Asylum and Frontex, and respective United Kingdom authorities. They should work together to prevent irregular Channel crossings.
Putting aside his utter rank incompetence and amateurship, only a few parts actually matter anyway.
But why?
The truth is this government is sinking faster than the Titanic after it split in two and went to the bottom of the Atlantic. We can but hope that like the Titanic when this government finally does end it takes out most of the crew as well. I am sure they are all nice enough people in person but they are about as useful as a marzipan dildo (Thanks Armando) and honestly I am bored of being governed by useless twods. The British people were never really sold on Labour before the election and after coming face to face with the reality of them in power they have decided they really don’t like them.
Hardly a shock when Labour since the election has gone out of their way to piss everyone off - in many ways you have to admire the sheer whimsical incompetence of it. Pensioners, the disabled, farmers, fishermen, oil workers, the employed, the rich, the poor, the military, women, the Muslim vote, the Indian vote, etc. You name it and they have annoyed them in some way and it is showing up in polling again and again. About the only people who are consistently happy are at the richer end of the socio-economic scale which makes sense really as that is Labour’s core vote now - the lanyard classes in the third sector, the affluent public sector and virtue signalling private sector workers. Whatever the claims made by the party it is no longer of or for the working class - they largely hate people they consider to be knuckle dragging racists.
Starmer’s personal polling has moved from the terrible to the fucking dire in recent months after getting a brief bounce for his military cosplay over Ukraine. You know when he spent weeks getting together a coalition of the willing to replace the US which turned into a coalition of the unwilling and then no coalition at all when people realised that they didn’t have enough troops nor interest in Ukraine. All of which was abundantly obvious to anyone with half a brain and modicum of interest in the subject. Starmer is the most unpopular PM at this point in the political cycle leading the most unpopular party at this point in the political cycle. His biggest challenge is that the more people see him and his party the more they dislike both.
However you would not know any of this if you turned on the BBC or other mainstream channel. No for them everything is just fine and apparently we the British public are just happy as Larry being overseen by this shambolic excuse of a government led by a man who appears to be a pathological liar. Well as you can see the polls tell a different story - you really don’t need a PHD in statistical analysis to poke through the data to find out the truth.
Which leads us back to this masterpiece of a “deal” - standby I am trying to sow my sides back up. When polled there is just under 30% of the public who thinks this deal is good. However you can bet that most of them come from the Europhile headbanger brigade who would happily gobble down a prime turd from an alsatian if you stuck an EU flag on it. The rest either don’t know, think it is bad or are ambivalent. However, to get to the deal that Starmer has been selling for the last few days he will actually now have to negotiate with the EU for months if not years. This process will expose the reality to the general public and what it means. Laws being made without any say, lots of money going to the EU without any back, loss of control over defence spending and much much more. I am confident that as this process chugs along the wheels on this polling bus are going to fall off at speed and we are not even at the best bits yet.
No to understand why this entire deal is irrelevant, you need to look at our domestic politics. The below polling shows the major issues that the public are worried about at any given time. Two things will jump out at you very rapidly when you look at the dates. The first is that migration has been shooting up peoples list of concerns since the start of the series and it shows no signs of slowing. The second is that post Labour’s win in July 2024 the economy has been consistently moving up as a mounting concern for the public who rightly know something is very off and that sadly much of it started when Labour won. This matters and it matters a lot for Starmer and Labour as this deal has the capacity to make both of these concerns much much worse.
Buried in the detail is a section on a youth movement deal which has been catchily renamed to try and hide what it means. Now Labour is already trying to spin this hard but the reality is that they will get pumped by the EU to keep this uncapped in terms of numbers because the bloc has a massive youth unemployment problem and historically pre Brexit one of their solutions was to offload it to the UK via freedom of movement. When and if this is signed you can bet that the UK will suddenly receive a massive wave of new EU migration as young people move here to try and get a job and learn English. They will compete with British youngsters for jobs and housing and in the end once settled you can bet they will never leave. The end result is that our immigration numbers will skyrocket even as Labour is trying at least superficially to bring them down. You can bet that this will not land well with the British public when this reality hits. No amount of explaining and forecasting is going to placate people who rightly believe that most politicians lie and that the British state is incompetent.
The other major mounting concern the public has is the economy and here the rubber really hits the road in multiple ways. Underpinning any advanced modern economy is energy and the cheaper the better. A good part of the reason why Western European economies have stagnated for nearly two decades is because of our elites' obsession with net zero and the green “revolution” which has introduced expensive and unreliable “renewable” sources into the grid like solar and wind. Though at face value they look cheap they are actually highly expensive due to the need to balance their intermittency with a backup system like gas and to pay the owners to turn them off when they are producing too much energy. You are talking billions each year on this though few realise it as it is hidden in the consumers costs. The net zero project has consistently pushed up our energy costs and with it slowly but surely de-industrialised our economies.
A large part of the net zero project has been the introduction of an emission trading scheme (ETS) whereby larger CO2 emitters have to pay for the carbon they produce with the idea being that this cost will lead to new technologies and methods of production. This cost of carbon is actually set at a much lower price within the UK when compared to the EU. However Labour wants to link the systems meaning that our carbon price will surge upwards causing our energy prices which are already the highest in the world to rise even further which will mean even more deindustrialisation, misery and poverty.
Beyond this the current EU ETS only covers the largest wholesale emitters like power stations and similar. But in 2027 this will be expanded to include domestic heating and transport with petrol prices forecast to surge up to 10p on day one (Link). That is based on a price of €45 per ton of carbon but the EU expects this to rise within 3 years to €340 a ton with a knock on impact on the public. This is literally going to price people off the roads and into an early death as many will not be able to keep warm. The implications for economies reliant on road transport are stark. Only a madman would actively choose to join what is effectively a death march and that is Labour’s objective.
The end outcome is that Reform really only has one direction to go baring an absolute crisis in the party. I mean how can they not when Labour is effectively opening the door for them by taking all the issues that are currently upsetting the public and not so much rubbing salt in them but pouring petrol on them and lighting them up. Worse than that they will do this in public and over months if not years in a process which is guaranteed to keep it front and centre in peoples minds. Mr N Farage must be licking his lips in anticipation of the political feast which is going to be served up by Labour - what a delight! But it gets better or worse depending upon your point of view. For Reform is a party which is now fully anti net zero and is leading the charge in terms of the changing vibe within the UK on the entire project. People are starting to grasp what it means for them and they are rapidly turning away from it and this will merge in the coming period with the negotations to tip many over the edge into outright hostility.
That is why this deal doesn’t matter as it has the germs of its own destruction planted in the centre of it but also the entire UK EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA). Labour has basically signed a document which will be used again and again and again to beat them to death and expedite the rise of a party and leader who is resolutely anti EU and everything it stands for and who will be driven to dump net zero which was integrated into the TCA from the beginning - so when one goes the other will as well. It is a testament to the absolute lack of strategic thinking and myopic vision within the EU that they would push something which was so obviously going to damage the status quo. Rather than reeling the UK back in this “deal” and process will act like a spring slowly compressing public opinion until “SNAP” it pushes back hard forcing the UK away from the EU even further leaving the bloc on its glide path into stagnation and geopolitical irrelevancy.
Agreed
You can't keep up with the poison this government is unleashing daily now
Agree with pretty much all of this except for "I am sure they are all nice enough people in person." Having spent some time in the vicinity of party political wonks, I am 100% certain they are vile people.
