I am increasingly pessimistic, particularly after just watching another Peter Hitchens video. I get it that nothing seems to be going in the right direction but I am neither a politician, nor an economist, nor a historian, so I understand that I have a somewhat limited understanding of the big picture and the forces that shape civilisations. My take is purely personal but as we await the birth of our first grandchild I cannot see that we are delivering the promise of providing a better world for our children. I hope I am wrong but see no signs.

The AFD are hardly borderline far right, the leader is a lesbian with a Sri-Lankan girlfriend, they are civic nationalists, civic nationalism by its very definition is leftism.

We are lost precisely because of a political class that is too cowardly to grasp the nettle.

Good writing. Having spent over two decades working in Trump's ‘shithole countries’, we’re in a bind. Kindness is weakness, and weakness is to be exploited. I hope that the inevitable correction occurs via the ballot box, but I'm not convinced. I see a possible South Africa future, and you can see what is now happening there: nasty stuff. Looking across the pond, I'm hopeful we get a second Republican term, and the US realigns us. Having witnessed the howls from the USAID brigade, it'll at least be entertaining.

We are living in we them and us society, where you are either welcomed or chastised according to your views and battle lines are the new norm and not to be crossed
